What Kind of Treatment - Grocery Store Potatoes??

What Kind of Treatment - Grocery Store Potatoes?? I've always heard that grocery store potatoes have been "treated" so they won't grow. How are they treated so they won't grow? Are they chemically treated? If so treated with what chemical(s)?
Or are they just 'treated' by being kept in cold storage until displayed on the grocery store for sale?
We all know in the spring/summer months, grocery store potatoes will sprout and grow if they are left to long in their bag.

Sprout inhibitors are not always used so in many cases grocery store potaotes can be used for seeding. Yes if they are treated it is with chemicals usually Maleic hydrazide or Chlorpropham.

They are treated in the fields with various treatments - see link below. Supplemental treatment may be applied in storeage. But the inhibitors don't prevent sprouting, just slow it so yes, stored potatoes will usually sprout - eventually.

There are many discussions here about using store-bought poatoes as seed potatoes in the home garden. The forum search will pull them up for you. It is a fairly common practice.
