Fertilizing Parlor Palm in the 511?

TheMasterGardener1(5B)August 25, 2012

Just got a parlor palm which was three clusters of palms so I was able to make three. I washed all the soil off the roots and got them into some 511. How should I go about fertilizing them? There is no CRF in the 511 I made. I used about 1/4 tsp of miracle gro all purpose 24-8-16 per gal of water. Too much, too little?

Should I fertilize at a low strength every water?

Thanks.

This is a smaller one of the three I got. It will be very happy in it's new home! :)

I find that they don't need much food. Once a month or 2 is fine. Miracle grow is fine to use or even fish fertilizer, get the ORDERLESS kind if the smell bothers you with the regular kind.

How much Dolomitic Garden Lime did you include when making the 5-1-1?

Hi
Do you which species this is. There are about 20/30 different Chameodorea that are called "Parlor" palms The significant difference is that "elegans" is a single trunk while most of the others are clumpers. They are incredibly easy to grow ,IME the only thing they won't tolerate is direct sun or hard freeze. They will grow in anything from sand to standing water . I wouldn't fertilize at all as long as growth continues . gary

No I dont. Mine are not the single trunk type, there is a bunch of small ones. It looks like it spreads and grows fast for a Parlor palm. I hear they can take years to grow a foot! :)

Greenman,

Any reason you asked how much lime I used? Do these palms not need much lime?

Thanks.

Just wanted to confirm that the Lime was there, adding Calcium and Magnesium.

I don't know much about palms, but I'd say fertilize once a week for convenience,
and watch how the plant reacts to increasing dosages.
