Putting a Holly in a container

mcgovAugust 16, 2011

I currently have a small (1.5 ft tall)holly bush in the container it was purchased in. Maybe 1ft tall by 12" diameter.

I would like to re-pot it into an bigger urn on my porch. It doesn't get direct sun due to an overhang. Do you think it will live and any suggestions on what soil mixture to use for the re-potting.

Thanks in advance

Virtually all woody plants do well in containers if you're versed in their cultural preferences and work toward providing them, with reasonable success. Knowing the species would be helpful. You'll probably need to provide winter protection by bringing it into an unheated garage for the winter, or burying the pot in the garden to help moderate air temperatures when they drop lower than the roots can tolerate.

It likes full sun while actively growing, and a shady spot out of the wind would be nice for over-wintering.
