How to clean Lava Rock Boulder?

LaveRockBoulderJuly 2, 2011

We just purchased a lava rock boulder for one of our front mulch beds. It's smallish (22" x 18" and about 45 lbs.) and has good shape but it's a little dirty and not as red as I think it could be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to clean off deep dust/dirt/whatever and bring out the great lava rock red? Other forums explain on how to clean the smaller landscape lava stones and the even smaller fist aquarium lava rock but I'm not seeing a lot of info on how to bring out the deep red from my lava rock boulder. Thanks!

If it is actually dirty, a strong jet of water and a coarse scrub brush should do the trick. But it's possible your rock is not completely red. As you probably know, there is great variation in lava rock, not only in color, but density, porosity, and form.

There are several very large lava boulders in my garden. They have some red streaks in them, but the color is only really apparent when it's raining and the stone is wet.
