Gardening in metal container

rmontcalNovember 7, 2011

I was walking in my neighborhood yesterday when I came across a house where people were moving out and there were some items out at the curb as trash. I scored, among other things, a large metal container, oval in shape, and about 2ft deep by about 3ft by 1ft.

When I called my mother to.tell her all about my finds, she warned me that the type of container material may affect the pH of the soil.

Really? Do I need to be careful? I have until the Spring to figure this out...

rmontcal, unless it is stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant material, the container will rust away; fertilizer is very corrrosive. Some metals like copper, will kill the roots of plants. All metal planters designed to last are usually lined with plastic or similar material to overcome this. You can achieve the same by growing your plants in individual plastic or clay pots set inside the metal container.
