Training a vine on arbor post

Lori BAugust 4, 2013

Hello - We just finished building a IG pool in our backyard, and an arbor was added overlooking the yard. I planted 2 purple leaf honeysuckle vines on each 8" arbor post. I'm looking for the best way to train these vines up. I have tied heavy-duty fishing line right now, but I'm not that fond of the look. You can see the fishing line on all sides of the post. Is there a better way? OR - after the vine becomes more mature, will the limbs become stronger and I can remove the fishing line over time.

Attaching a few pics. The gray conduit is on the backside of the arbor posts. I still want to paint those brown to blend in a bit better.

After the vine begins to grow on the top of the arbor, you can remove the fishing line. It is just temporary.

Haven't seen these for awhile, but there are vine ties that affix to the wood, small discs, with a bendable wire to secure the vine. Don't have a package here to tell you the name. You'd maybe find at a good nursery or try googling vine training.

Your back area is great!
