bark mulch instead of grass?

chompersmama(ONT CANADA)August 28, 2007

I am wondering if anyone has some input into my predicament. The previous owners in their infinite wisdom filled the back yard with gravel(beside a swimming pool no less), anyway this year we put in a deck after I spent an entire week moving gravel to the edges of the lawn so it would be covered by decking. There is a small area now where we will be putting a large sandbox and the kids playfort. We contemplated grass, but the area is north and has dense shade from the 2 large maple trees on either side. I was wondering if anyone has a play area for children made of mulch/bark? I do not want to spend the money and time on bringing in topsoil and trying to grow grass, and or groundcover. Any tips would be much appreciated. I will see if I can attach a photo somehow!

p.s. anyone know where to get good quality wood chips in southern ontario delivered?

I don't have small children anymore, but wood chips should be OK. Not as kid friendly as grass.

Try your town hall. IN Guelph, the city brings cheap wood chips. Now they are not "good quality" if you are looking for uniform chuncks, but the cost can't be beat.
