Fillers for 'Smaragd' privacy hedge in its early stage

amelieny1August 10, 2014

Have a row of 2.5 - 3ft tall 'Smaragd' Arborvitae that we hope will eventually serve as a privacy hedge. They are spaced about 2 feet apart. While they currently dont provide much privacy in either height or width , are there any recommendations for temporary filler plants to between the arborvitaes while we wait for them to grow tall and wide? Thank you!

Other plants would be competitive and harmful to the arborvitae. Be patient. Give them good extra good care to speed them on their way.

there is no reason you could not plant things in a row 2 or 3 feet in front of them ... but not between them ...

think sunflowers... anything of width and height..

you might want to try the annuals or perennials forums ...

It should be clarified that the "2' or 3' in front of" should be a vacant gap where light can enter. There shouldn't be anything planted that will shade any part of the arborvitaes.
