Need help identifying beetle-looking creature

magenta85May 18, 2012

Hi,

I've done so much googling, but I can't find anything that looks like this beetle I saw on the outside of my raised bed this morning. I'm trying to figure out whether he's harmless, or whether he's a sign of big trouble to come.

If anyone know what it is and could help me out, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!!

That's the pupae of a cicada. See that split on its back? It's trying to rupture the pupal case and get the heck outta there. It will emerge as an adult cicada.

My kids have grossed out a lot of their friends by taking these (once they're empty) to school for show and tell.

hahaha thanks so much! Maybe if I hadn't been too scared to touch it I would have figured out it was a shell and not an actual bug :-)
