1'-1 1/2' inch bark?

TheMasterGardener1(5B)December 29, 2011

A few weeks ago I tranplanted a house plant (spathiphyllum)

in 1 and 1-1/2" inch bark nothing else. Like the plants in the 5-1-1, it is thriving!!! I do ph the water however when I water/fertilize. I need some info. Do I use lime in such large porosity mix? I never tryed this and I got to say if this plant keeps it up I will be using this for a large container garden. I need some advice on how to keep up, just keep "ph-ing" my water? I know this will not have a good buffer like the 5-1-1.

Anyone do this before? Will I need fertilizer with no urea?

Thanks. I will have to get the cam out and post some pics hopefully.

Wow, I really wish you could edit!!!!

To not mix anyone up, my eyes fooled me, the bark measures more in the 1 inch range and some smaller. Sorry.

Spathiphyllum can tolerate a wide range of mixes, but they do best in a well-draining mix that
is watered frequently. The reason I would still use smaller particles is root-room. The plant will
run out of root-room in short order in a container of super chunky mix. In fact, my Peace Lily
already needs to be divided and transplanted the way I did last year. I used a very course mix
of bark, perlite, and pumice. I did add the recommended Lime at the time of mixing, and I've
been fertilizing at least once a month. The Peace Lily is blooming, too.
