Sugar Daddy peas shaded by cover crop?

wertach zone 7-B SCMay 13, 2014

My sugar daddy peas are blooming and producing even in the 80 and 90 degree temps that we have already.

I have never had them to keep going in this kind of heat!

I have a cover crop of winter wheat that is on the south side and is shading them a little. The wheat is just close enough to shade the ground and the bottom of the vines.

I'm thinking that the micro climate is keeping them going in this heat?

The seeds on the wheat are starting to develop. It is time for me to mow them to use as mulch before the seed is viable.

I'm thinking of leaving a strip about 4' wide to keep them shaded, I don't need the space. I will still have more than enough for mulch.

Plus I can gather the seed for replanting this fall.

Leave or cut it?

Now, after I read my preview, I probably have answered my own question!!!!!!

But what the heck, after all of this two finger typing I'll post it anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was a lot of work! My fingers are tired!

And the conclusion?

I'm guessing you're going to leave a swath of wheat to shade them. Am I right? :)

Yes Kevin, you are right!

I will have to remember to do the same next spring, I love fresh peas.

I picked a mess of peas and had them for supper last night, they are sooooo good!
