Need Suggestions - fast growing screen/vine

shinyredthings(8)September 2, 2010

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need some suggestions. I'm in Austin, Texas where the soil is dry, sandy and alkaline. But that I can change. I've added peat moss and a sprinking of ammonium sulphate and the soil is now at a neutral level(ish).

The problem: We have a chain link fence leading onto an alley at the rear of the property.

The solution: A fast growing screen plant (I was thinking bamboo but it really clashes with everything else) or vine which is hardy.

Any suggestions on plants? I would love some flowers and will be planting ASAP.

I'm in a totally different zone (upstate New York), but this may work for you. I have a similar issue in my backyard. I planted a native variety of climbing rose and the effect is lovely. My soil here is like baked mud.

If you don't get many suggestions here, you could cross-post in the Texas Gardening forum. Or search "Texas" in the Vines forum.

Cross Vine is another option....
Both of these are orange...
Confederate Jasmine - aggressive/evergreen vine looks like Asian Jasmine
All of the above have tendrils

Carolina Jessamine evergreen vine/yellow flowers in spring. Not very aggressive. Can eventually develop chlorosis..

Dwarf Wax Myrtle- Fast growing evergreen shrub approx 5 feet tall. Soft texture/easy to shear. Perfect next to a chainlink fence
