Crushed shells

wrybreaddOctober 30, 2010

Does anyone know of a place that sells crushed shells for landscaping in the Virginia/DC area? I want to put down the shells for a small seating area I'm creating in our yard. I know you can get them in New England but that's kind of a trek!

Thanks ---

Check at the Chesapeake shore area, but that might be just crab shells. What quantity and how much are you willing to pay to achieve your design? Check local seafood restaurants that serve clams and oysters. Aloha

Sounds interesting.

You might want to post this in the Virginia forum:

and perhaps the Mid-Atlantic forum:

Good luck.

Oyster shells are what were used around coastal VA, and you still see them in use in Colonial Williamsburg. I tried getting my hands on some a few years back for a client, and they're pricey and hard to come by. Apparently old oyster shells make great reef material for baby oysters, so responsible fishing crews take the shells back out to sea with them and dump them for habitat. I finally found a vendor, but I feel like it worked out to well over $300/cu yd by the time I factored in the freight charges.
