need ideas for upgrading/repairing my barn

cyalexaFebruary 20, 2014

I am having some repairs made to my 15 year old pole barn, used for horses. Among other things, much of the dirt around the barn has blown and/or washed away, exposing footings and leaving openings under the walls in places .

The contractor had 2 ideas for replacing the dirt, using either 1-1.5" gravel or using screenings. I'm concerned about the horses walking on the gravel and wonder if screenings near the doors to the stalls and gravel elsewhere would be best.

I would be grateful for any input.

I wonder if you can not add treated lumber such as 2 by 8s or what ever size is needed. Then back fill. I recently built a horse barn and used 6 by 6s between poles to retain rock dust under the mats and soil outside the barn. 2 by 8s 12 feet long are about $11 to $13 each
