Black bugs eating eggplant leaves

newtogardening99June 24, 2008

I have noticed that some small black bugs seem to be eating the leaves of all my eggplant plants (Japanese Ichiban, Black Beauty and a small purple Indian eggplant). All the leaves have tiny holes in them all over and when I looked closer I saw some small blag beetles/fruit fly looking things. I have pictures of the creatures but I am not sure how I can post an attachment on here.

Any ideas on how to get rid of them?

Cover your eggplant with row covers and keep them covered until they start to bloom. Then you have to uncover them for pollination, but at that point the leaves are MUCH less appealing to the flea beetle.

If you are not against using chemicals then Sevin would also work. Be careful to NOT dust the flowers.. don't want to kill any bees..
