DE and the coop

beeliz(2)May 17, 2011

Hello all,,been a while since I've been on...I purchased myself some food grade diatomaceous earth for the hens coop,,I recently got 2 young silkies, and I heard that DE is a must if you want to prevent mites and lice ect on the hens and infestations in the coop, and it's a natural way which I like. my question is this,,if I place some in the coop, and under the bedding and on the coop floor,is it very dangerous to breath in if it were to be stirred up? how do you avoid it since I go in every day to clean and feed ect?? Should I worry,or is it safe?

thanks !

I've got info on DE here, scroll down to the DE section to read it:

Short answer--don't breathe the dust. But I'd think you'll be just fine as long as you aren't standing there inhaling the dust as it's kicked up. :)
