transporting pigs

hound_dogMay 11, 2010

I am going to be picking up 4 pigs in a couple weeks. they will be about 50 pounds. I am wondering what a good way of moving them is. i have a pickup. and access to lots of hay. what are my other options? i dont really have a crate, though i suppose i could make one if i needed too. thanks.

Pigs of that size are agile, and usually quite willing to fight and bite.

You can "hog tie" them ... tie a front and rear foot together with a secure knot and leave them lying on their sides. That depends on your having knot-tying ability.

But large crates like dog carriers would be best.

Rent a horse trailer with fully enclosed sides.

If you can tie the legs, great. Get a burlap(feedsack) for each and drop 'em in. Tie the top well. Pigs get hot quick so keep them in the shade and move the quickly.
