The work of Send a Cow

sendacowJune 8, 2009

Hello everybody, I'm Jess from Send A Cow and wanted to take the chance to introduce myself here on this wonderful forum. Send A Cow is a charity based in Bath, United Kingdom and we run sustainable agricultural programmes in nine countries in Africa to help small-scale farmers overcome poverty and malnutrition. We were founded in 1988 by a group of UK farmers who sent cows to families in post-conflict Uganda. If you want to find out more and see how you can help change a families future through ethical and sustainable farming have a look at the website or indeed get in touch! Thank you very much :-)

And this is a forum where we talk about our farms and animals.

I hear that they typically send cows to people who are ill equipped to own cows, so in the end it becomes "send a pile of dead rotting meat". Which I'm sure is very helpful if you are a carrion crow.

I'm relatively new to farming, but I think that someone needs to send a bull if the agricultural programs are to be sustainable.

I would like a cow. How do I get on the list so someone will send me a free cow? I wonder if shipping is included...

Yeah, me, too. I am still waiting for the 40 acres and a mule the state of Texas promised me when I signed up for homesteading. I kept a look-out for the UPS truck bringing me my mule for two years! I'd settle for a cow . . . .

Seriously I read of this program or something very similar. Farming Magazine, maybe? The write up portrayed a neat concept, kinda like if you buy a man a fish you feed him for a day, yet buy him a fishing pole you feed him for life. Makes more sense to me than just continually sending blankets & bags of dry milk.

I've no idea if the OP is a scam or not nor have I checked out the link. I did want to pipe in to say programs like this are out there, and making a difference. As always one should do their homework before making donations.
p.s. no it is not okay to contact me for a donation, I can't make ends meet myself.

I remember reading how nice people were to make small micro loans to the Africans so they could buy Genetically Enhanced seed stock. Wonderful.

Now I learn they stole all the land from the Africans because they could not pay back the micro loans. The banks now own millions of acres of land that formerly were owned by natives. Also the natives lost all their native grain strains and became dependent on Monsanto.

End result is they become slaves of the rich people. They lost their native lands.

Then again probably not much different than what happened to the native american indians.

We are learning all this now because that is what Obama's grandmother and mother were doing at the banks to the poor natives.

Now we are doing the same to americans as we foreclose their homes. Oh well. Obama knows how to do it all.

I think that you oversimplified the issue in a way to make a political point, and I also think that kind of talk belongs in the hot topics forum.

Marlin, I have a friend with a mule, she would love to part with...(read "very noisy"), I wonder what UPS would charge to get it from BC (far north almost in Alaska) to Texas? I would love to see customs handle that package! lol
Did you get the 40 acres at least? I'd settle for 10...skip the mule (unless it's a kawasaki UTV)

Mxbarbie, I asked at UPS and although I'd love a mule, even a noisy one, I really can't afford the shipping from British Columbia. We settled for 9 1/2 acres, and frankly, even with a mule, I think 40 acres would be too much to handle!
If you want to see our farm (sans mule) go to which is our website. We aren't selling anything, and if you want our monthly newsletter with recipes, updates on our chickens and bees, nature activities, and gardening tips (not specific to Texas or the south)you can sign up and we'll keep your e-mail address a secret!
We had friends who lived in BC and they were charming, except when Tom played the bagpipes.

Funny, about the bagpipes... My Dad plays them also (his name is Thomas! ~he goes by his middle name though).
Imagine waking up to that noise every Sunday as a teenager...yikes! you just can't hide from that noise.
I'll check out your site & thanks!
