What is eating my pole bean leaves?

ikea_gwJune 4, 2010

There are irregular holes in the leaves. The damage is just starting to appear and my beans are 5 ft tall. I don't think it is japanese beetles since it is still too early for them. I also don't think it is Mexican bean beetle as the holes are pretty big, maybe size of a small finger nail. It looks like what caterpillars make on a cabbage leaf. Any ideas?

Could be cabbage loopers. THey are restricted to cabbage though that is their preference. Use Bt. Check out the link below on the Common Pests of Beans and Peas.

That link is great, Dave. I think it could very well be the bean leaf beetle.

I went to the garden center to check out BT. The back label doesn't mention it controls beetles for beans. Dave, are you sure it works on beans? Also I have a choice of spray or dust. What is better?

No, Bt is for caterpillars, not beetles. That's why I mentioned it for loopers above. It isn't a beetle control pesticide. Sorry for the confusion.

Want organic or chemical control? Chemical control is Sevin (carbaryl). I use only the liquid, never the dust, of it and only as a very last resort as it also kills all the beneficials. Keep in mind that your leaves can tolerate a lot of damage before it affects any production. Organic controls linked below.

I have some spinosad at home. Would it work on the beetles?
