rooster - what to do

jengaleAugust 25, 2009

We only had 2 hens and 1 rooster. Our dog got into their coop. She killed the 2 hens and attacked the rooster. My question is what do we do now? Do we get him some hens, how many, when to get them and how to introduce them to him? The ladies down the road said they would sell us some laying hens. Or do we give him away? Right now he looks sad and I'm sure it's going to take him some time to recover from the trauma. He is a very nice rooster so I would kind of hate to give him away. Or will he be alright for the winter by himself until we can get chicks in the spring? Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I would get rid of the rooster. Your dog knows where he is and will keep triing to get in the pen. I had a couple dogs I had to get rid of. THey just kept killing the chickens. I have 5 dogs now and free roaming chickens and my dogs don't bother any of them. If you make the chicken coops dog proof then get him a couple girls.
