Chicken question

farmerintraining(7)October 8, 2008

Hello I have a curiosity question. I have 6 hens (no rooster) and in the coop they all lay in the same basket. Kinda funny sometimes to watch them they tend to stand in line clucking and fussing till the basket is vacant. Is this normal?

Perfectly normal - that nest box is obviously everyone's favorite!

It must be! How many do you have?

My hens do the same, especially if there is a broody hen in the nest. It's like a little chicken conspiracy to get babies. :) It's natural for them to want to create a clutch of eggs.

If the nest is different than the others (darker, maybe?), consider creating a couple of others just like it. My hens prefer the dark, hidden type nest--I just hang a curtain of black landscaping cloth over the front of the nests, slit up the center like a curtain. They love it, they feel like they are hiding their eggs from predators. :)
