HAVE: Adopt-A-Newbie ongoing list 3

kilngod z6b(Zone 6b)July 6, 2014

Newbies & New Sponsors:

Please read the directions.

(We will not list you if you are missing things.)

Newbies, might you like a little help getting started growing and trading seeds? (Brand new, hoping for more garden variety, needing a boost after a garden or financial loss, or just want a little advice?)

Veterans, do you have extra seed that could help a new gardener-trader get started? (From accidental over-harvesting, buying enough commercial seed for varieties' sake, or because you just want to help others grow?)

Newbies are newbies if they are:
1) truly new to Gardenweb, OR
2) are not new to GW but new to trading and seeds, OR
3) could really use help with seed access for any reason.
Adopters can adopt whomever they please, and so can select according to their own wishes and criteria.

Newbie Adoptees:
Pre-adoption procedure
--Your email address must 'show to members' on your member page in order to be put on the list. Make sure your email setting is correct (see link below).
--Make sure you have things listed on your Want List (see link), so we know if we have things in your interests. You can list, for example, Black Hollyhocks, Hollyhocks, or Old Fashioned/Cottage type flowers, or Things for shade or perennials, and such. (specific or general, anything that helps someone match to you)
--Sign up by posting here. Tell us something about your garden interests.
--Include both your zone & state in your member page info (there is a special trick to this - see link/note in next post below).

Costs to the newbie adoptee:
--Pay the postage to the person sending them seeds (or plants) in advance.
--'Seeds only' adopts are the easiest and cheapest postage at about $1.50+bubble envelope to $4.00 and bubble envie/other protection included by the veteran.
--'Plants too' adopts ideally are Priority Mail and may cost about $5 to $14 depending on size.
--Postage payment options include paypal, stamps, check, money order.

When you are contacted for adoption:
--Check back here to confirm you have been adopted.
--Check the Rate & Review forum regarding the sponsor who contacted you. This is found at: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/raterev/ Use the search box in the center of the page (below the posts) inputting the person's screenname.
--Arrange postage costs and gift details with your adopter.
--Send postage to your adopter.
--After receiving the seed package, thank your adopter & post here too (so we know the adopt worked through).
--Post good feedback/thanks for your adopter on the Rate&Review forum

Sponsors who want to adopt:
--Standard amount for an adoption = 10 packs of seeds, more if you would like. Seeds are the focus, though you can contribute plants too if the timing is zone-appropriate.
--Try to pick a newbie that matches your zone / climate/ region so that the seeds you know best and have to offer have a chance of growing there for the newbie. Having similarities in garden interests is a plus too.
--POST HERE FIRST announcing who you are adopting BEFORE you contact the newbie.
--Then email the newbie, introducing yourself, providing your screen name, zone, town, state, and offer to adopt them.

The host/hostess(es) will (me & other helpful volunteers):
--Will compile and post lists of the newbies+zone+state every so often.
--Will check through recent posts and remove those who have been adopted from the new lists when compiling.
--To make things print bold, post before the words (removing the extra spaces I put there), and after the words (again, removing the spaces). This will help folks find the most recent newbies-to-adopt list. For italics, same system, just use an 'i' instead of the 'b'.

Newbies, there is also a 'Newbie Seed Packs for SASBE' thread run by bakemom on this seed exchange board. She has generously run it for years, with donations sent to her from lots of veteran traders. There is also an 'Adopt-A-Milkweed-Newbie' list run by kchd. Check those out.

-Click 'Member Pages' (way down, bottom left of this page),
-Then click 'Edit Your Membership Details',

Hmmmm...it seems that the site is not transferring the "zone + state in your zone box" to the 'posted by' line right away. It isn't just with Artax97, I'm seeing it now with many of the newbies. Oh gracioius, that is a downer. I'll try to figure out what is up.... Lealam, Mizzteek, Shogie, you are all in this bind. When we get it sorted, I'll add you. (Could you 'redo' putting this info in, just in case it makes some difference. Gracious, how many newbies has this happened to...)

My seed list is semi-extensive but most is still store purchesed seed (some, like the Nicotiana i have thousands, others I have a few seeds left) Im interested in seeds and plants, And have a greenhouse. im in Zone 5, Massachusetts. I enjoy Exotic, Tropical And weird plants. fast growing is also cool :3 Edible fruits/plants are great, but i equaly enjoy having a poison garden.

As far as zone go's I should be able to replicate it in the greenhouse, or some other way to micro-climate it. Horrably funny thing, ive grown tropicals, like my kumquat tree from seed, and people go "O.O you got that to grow in mass? inside, but still O.o" Yet i did manage to kill a spider plant, a few tomato's, and a eggplant. >.> Dont blame me blame the soil xD (It was a soil issue, ive delt with and now no more deaths yay :D)"

I currently have a bunch of Jalepeno seedlings and Banana Pepper Seedlings starting and healthy on the sun porch. But I will have to learn how to ship/share them. lol I have a large garden and am always looking to try new plants. I have also just recently started flower gardening and am interested in learning about growing fruit trees and bushes. Hopefully someone will adopt me :) Looking forward to working with y'all."

"What a great idea! I would love to participate, as an adoptee, as I have nothing to share just yet.

My zone is a bit tricky. I live in the mountains of Southern Calif, just above 6K ft. Below 10F is not uncommon in the snowy months, and it sometimes gets as high as 85F in late Summer. Our trees are mostly pine, cedar, oak, and spruce, so the soil is quite acidic.

I try to stick to perennials, since we have such a short growing season. So far, I've done well with easy stuff like daffys and tulips. I planted my first hostas last year, but the darn gopher got 6/8 of them. I also have a half dozen fruit trees that we put in about two years ago (but no fruit yet), and a couple of tiny lilacs.

I've attached a picture of my back yard, just after we finished the fence and terracing. My Grandson and doggie were helping :) "

Hi everyone. I am pretty new to gardening. I am in zone 6/7 (near Philadelphia). I have some tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers growing in a bed and also in some buckets. This is my second year growing. I am interested in learning more and growing more! I want to try to harvest some seeds this year. Next season I want to add some flowers to my garden too but I don't really know where to start. I do not have any seeds right now, but eventually I would like to get rid of my newbie status! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This sounds like so much fun! I'm still learning how to navigate the forum but would love to be "adopted" for seeds/plants. I'm in Zone 7 - Long Island, NY and just created 4 planting beds. My Veggie Garden is going although I think I may be a little overcrowded. I have 2 good sized perennial flower gardens I started and a corner bed surrounding a fire pit that I'm still trying to figure out what to do with.

Would love seeds/plantings for perennial flowers - especially anything to plant in Fall for Spring 15 blooms. I picked up a few plants sold at local garden centers that I see everywhere in the neighborhood but would love some not-so-common flowers too! I'm sure I've made some mistakes but have been reading tons so I can have a nice full garden one day.

Hi, my name is Jen, a potential newbie, and I lost most of my potted garden to an unexpectedly cold winter this year in Memphis after gardening for en three years. I am new to GW, but have made one trade. I don't have an extensive garden, but I do have a variety of plants. I am a vine addict, but most died, I did bring everything in this year, but our heat didn't work, lol! I am looking for common, but unique plant seeds. I love anything with fringed leaves, soft and fuzzy, red, or heavily scented. My eyesight isn't great, so I cherish plants that appeal to my other senses as well. Thanks!

"Planty Warbucks" - you crack me up, MissMalarky!

MissMalarky, yooper_at_heart, bella20128 - adjust your zone box (to contain zone and state). See above directions.

kimpy225, adjust your zone box (to contain zone and state) & email settings (show to members). See above directions.

Veterans/Sponsors ( & :) Criptid & Canyonwind )- please email the newbie directly right away. Do not use the GW emailing system. There can be problems both with the website as well as with the newbie's home email settings -- you'll get sent to spam and they'll never see it (email from a 'web system' is particularly vulnerable to this). This is why we require the newbies to have their email posted for members to see. I will add this explicitly to the directions in the future. (Didn't realize it was not there already. My bad.)

Canyonwind (Annie), thanks dahlin'. It is my pleasure, and I'm so glad some of y'all are sticking with this in the midst of the season. Thanks right back!

Sdambr, you rock, just a dear. Come back and be put on the list again in the fall or winter (Late Dec through early March is the best season to be adopted. Second best is Oct - early Nov.) That is when all the veterans are purging last year's seed that is still good, but do not have enough for their big bed. Or they have just ordered a ton of seed and can spare enough for several newbies because they know where to order for great prices and get big packs. Or they've harvested way too much of their own seed.)

Ooooh I just found this! Can I sign myself up for adoption?

I was on a waiting list for three long years for a community garden plot and I just got my plot this year. I've started with some simple things - cherry tomatoes, tomatillos, a couple heirloom tomatoes, squash, etc.

Some of my favorite things in life are tomatoes, basil, peaches, winter squash, summer squash, and more tomatoes.

I eat cherry tomatoes like other people eat potato chips - I got into gardening because I would have bankrupted myself buying tomatoes at farmers markets otherwise.

I live in Northern Virginia. I'm new but learning. I have nothing to trade yet, but I hope to in the next year or two. I'm particularly interested in heirloom tomatoes and heirloom winter squash.

Please adopt me!

Thank you!

Iowa zone 4/5 had to take early retirement in 09 and life has been upside down since. This year I thought I'll start a garden and think about other things... That decision has made a great difference!!

Anyway, my husband has given me a small chunk of yard to use I did a patch of veg and a patch of flowers, some store bought, some seed, etc. Didn't kill it all nearly as quickly as I thought I would have, that is for sure!!

I hope to be paired with someone with patients for me and a passion for gardening and a bit of hope they know what they are talking about! :)

So far I have started a photo book/Journal as I know I can not recall what I have and where I am going. I have a file of seeds to trade and seeds to plant as well as a section with all my receipts and documents that may or may not need later! I have also taken before and during photos but have a while before any AFTER photos will be taken!

Not sure what an adopter would want to know about me so will leave it at this...

Hi again. I have been doing some research, and I would like to start a big flower garden in the backyard too with perennials and annuals to help with the vegetable garden. Any seeds or recommendations on what to get would be awesome! Also any help on growing mint or other herbs mixed in the actual garden bed would be helpful too! I want to add more vegetables to my garden, but it is hard to figure out the layout.

Hello,
I used this seed exchange for a bit a couple years ago when I just began gardening but due to family problems I lost my interest seed trading and gardening all together. I am just now getting back in to it and am realizing how fun it is again! I am still very much a newbie at gardening and the only seeds I found that I have are from 2010, so if I could be adopted that would be amazing. I'm interested in growing any types of edibles like veggies, herbs, and tropical fruits! Oh yea and I live in Southern California, zone 10 I believe.

Thanks so much!

wish i could adopt all you newbies, but hang in there!

probably very soon the oldbies (lol) will be coming back around once they get out of harvest rush! its still a pretty hectic time for those of us who like to play in the dirt =)

Queen-Gardener(5 OH)

I just registered to this site, but I was trading on another site and through Craigslist, and I have consulted this site many times with questions. I have a few things to trade, only a couple are listed on my Have List because that's what I'm sure I have, and also I'm new at gardening and don't have a lot. I'll have more next year. We moved into our house last fall. I'm new to gardening on my own, having my own garden is AWESOME, but I know what I want and I have high tastes because I've been around gardening most of my life, had a Master Gardener in the family, and I love to look at catalogues, but can't afford it all! I'm a stay at home mom, tight budget, I try to squeeze in clearance plants from Lowes and Walmart from my grocery money. Here's what I most want:
Echinops / globe thistle
Crocosima "Lucifer"
I would love some bulbs - spring, summer and fall, check my list or just offer what you have.
Allium "Cristophii" or "Spider" is a biggie for me!
Billy Buttons seeds /Craspedia globosa
I'd love seeds of double and neat colored Echinachea, like Pink Poodle, Secret Glow, Virgin, double pink, green ones, etc.
Cuttings of Rosary Vine are top on my list, too.

There are a ton of Star Trek-themed named iris and daylily that I'm looking for, so if you have that, PLEASE work something out with me!!! Check out my list. Thanks!!!

I am going to re-post, as this isn't a trade.
I am 28, have my first garden, we moved into our house last fall. I know what I want because I've been raised a gardener, with a Master Gardener in the family. I also love to look at catalogues, which doesn't help when you're on a budget! I scrimp and use grocery budget money to buy dying clearance plants at Walmart and Lowes. I discovered trading this year, with a little success. I signed up for this site the other day, hoping to acquire the many plants I love & need for the perfect garden!
I am looking for:
Echinops/globe thistle *most wanted
Crocosima 'Lucifer'
Billy Buttons seeds /Craspedia globosa
I would love some bulbs - spring, summer and fall, check my list or just offer what you have.
Allium 'Cristophii' or 'Spider' is a biggie for me!
I'd love seeds of double and neat colored Echinachea, like Pink Poodle, Secret Glow, Virgin, green ones, Double Pink, etc.
Thank you very, very much for any of these!

Im a newb here this will be my second attempt at gardening. This last time I planted in my lawn topsoil and didnt do as I had plan thats for sure. This year I have built a few raised beds but have decided to amend the soil I planted on last year by going up adding natural fertilizers like compost, and rock dust and worm castings to build the soil so that I will be able to grow down threw my raised bed into my original topsoil that will overtime become richer. All the studing I have done says if you invest in the soil then you can hardly go wrong now I just need some seeds to start me off. Im trying to go as organic as possilbe so I really dont know if the seeds matter or not. But thanks and I hope to be blessed by a green thumb with some knowledge and some seeds of my own to sow.

Hello Everyone!! Im really excited about this part of gardenweb! I didnt know it existed until I signed up haha. I wanted to trade asap but i didnt know seed trades invoved 30+ seeds, which I dont have yet. I am wondering if anybody would adopt me! I am a college student so as much as I want a varied garden I cant be splurging on different plants.
I live in a zone 9 and am slowly starting to construct a shaded area to combat our texas 100+ sunny days.

What I am most interested in is anything culinary. I am a big fan of cooking! So any sort of herbs/veggies/fruits would make me happy. Im also slowly building a herb garden out in the back. Its small but I take pride in it! I bought a whole bunch of heirloom veggies this spring and I wouldnt mind sharing some seeds once they all give fruit. Which shouldnt be long!

Im also interested in flowers and medicinal herbs. I wanted to also do a flower bed this year but my wallet told me no. ha. I went with veggies instead cause they give you something to eat afterwards :P I think its so cool how with proper care and nutrients you can have amazing flowers! My goal is to build a flower bed with the best looking flowers ive ever seen in my life haha.

I dont want to just be all cheapo so if you adopt me you can rest assure that ill get you back one day ;) I just enjoy gardening. Its one of the things im starting to get most passionate about!

Hi! I just bought my first home after years of apartment living and am starting my first gardens :) I have two raised beds already built and hope to build 2 - 4 more over the winter.

I am going to try veggies and fruits (I have two tiny blackberry and blueberry plants someone gave me-we will see if they survive the winter!) I am also hoping to grow a small orchard (I have a couple of early harvest and Jonathan apple trees and 2pecan trees on order to join the unidentified apple tree in my front yard :)

I am really interested in starting out simple-tomatoes, lettuce etc. and would love to start savings seeds as well. I also hope to try an indoor herb garden once we finish all of the rehabbing in the house. I would love to be adopted, and Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

Hello, I moved from Northern NY to Southern California, Zone 9. I don't have any seeds but would love to start a garden. Its a totally new climate for me but from what I have been reading is that any time now is a good time to start planting a garden because the weather is supposed to cool off. though my fiance says it is still warm. I think its hot. lol.
Anyway I would love for someone to adopt me so i can restart a garden here.
I would love herbs of any kind, and of course veggies, i have updated my want list of seeds which is very generalized right now.

Hi, I am a part of my agricultural class at school and we created a fully indoor, self-sustained hydroponics system. However, as we are a public charter school, we have limited resources and are looking for donations. anything you can offer would be amazing. we can offer payment for shipping or SASBE. If you consider making a donation, please email me at makenziejordyn@yahoo.com
Thank you so much,
Jordyn
P.S. We are just now learning how to start from seed, so any kind of donations you make would be appreciated. Plant sales will be used to help fund the school and excess produce will be donated to a local soup kitchen. :D

Thank you.

krwhit, make sure you post your zone for all to see. Right now yours says NONE. Go into your member page to update it. Also, go in to your exchanges and trading and list more specifically what you want...ie vegetables,...hot peppers, carrots ect....

Thanks,

I'm willing to adopt Grantgarden2. I've been wintersowing for years and most of the seeds I have are harvested from plants I raised from wintersowing.

Grantgarden2, you don't have any wants listed on your profile page so you need to do that and make your direct email visible to members so we can converse about seeds that would make the most sense for your garden and would make you happy.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I consider roses the world's most expensive annuals, so now you're just rowing my kind of boat.

Hi everyone. I am still looking to be adopted too.

Any vegetable seeds or flowering seeds to help with a vegetable garden would be very helpful. I have one garden bed done, 8 buckets, and an in-ground bed in the front yard. I will be working on two more vegetable beds to have ready in the spring. I have grown hot and sweet peppers, tomatoes, snap peas, basil, green beans, and (failed) cucumbers. I would love to try other vegetables and some herbs/flowers in the spring. Eventually I want to try and save my own seeds. Any help would be great! I think I changed all my settings to allow emails to go through. I am Zone 6/southeastern PA.

SOS please adopt!!! -- OK, it's not really an emergency :-)

I'm a 20-something individual in Kansas City(zone 6), I rent a room in a house and sadly have no outdoor garden space. BUT I would like to create a vertical garden to bring some nature indoors for the winter. I like anything that will grow inside, but I do have a special fondness for lilies, succulents, and flowers. Herbs too would be appreciated as I love to cook & bake with them. If you are interested in adopting me-thanks for your support!

I'd love to be adopted. We purchased a 100 year old house this year and have been working on rehabbing the 1/4 acre garden. Zone 8a in Washington on Puget Sound - and I do mean *on* the Sound. If you hike down to the bottom of our garden you're on the beach. We have terraces, steep slopes, a lot of water, and clay soil which I've been working on improving.

I have a steep set of terraces along which I've espaliered fruit trees and planted raspberries - strawberries are coming in the spring - and I've gotten some perennial herbs and roses in along one slope. I'm looking for bee garden plants (I need pollinizers!), plants to attract beneficial insects, perennials to help stabilize my steep hillside (about 45 degree slope), and herbs. The daylilies I inherited are doing a good job stabilizing the soil, but I could sure use a lot more of them!

Thanks so much for this list. We newbies appreciate it!

I'm a newbie with a growing family. I'm pregnant with little ones so can't spend a lot of time/money caring for needy plants. However I also have bigger helpers that love watching their garden grow! I need hardy seeds to plant that kids and husband can grow easily. We have plenty of space, sun, shade, and some pesky animals/bugs. We love flowers just as much as veggies/fruit seeds. Any little bit helps.

Tis the season, and all that good stuff. Also, my one year GW aniversery is just around the corner, so I figured I'd pay back a little of the generosity that was shown me when I first got started. (Thank you kchd for adopting me. I'll forever be your red-headed step-child.)

Leilla -- Thanks for updating the list of who is waiting to be adopted. If it wasn't for your initiative, I don't think I'd have the time to read back through the tread and figure out who still needed adopting.

I'm willing to adopt these three zone 9-10 people:
raisedbedgardener Southern California (edibles-veggies, herbs, tropical fruits)
MissMalarky zone 9, Tx (Edibles & odd plants - containers )
drewglenn15 zone 11 Fla

I emailed all three of you through Yahoo. (GW has notoriously spotty email delivery)

Update: I've already heard back from raisedbedgardener. He is happy to be adopted. Also heard back from MissMalarky. Proceeding with both adoptions.

Hello! I would love to be adopted. I live in the Kansas City Missouri area (Raytown). I made most of my backyard into a garden this past year. I grew mostly tomatoes and Baby Lima Beans. I would love to have some heirloom tomato seeds. Around my house I have a lot of shade, so I am looking for any shade tolerant plants, both vegetables and flowers. To be honest I am open to just about any kind of vegetable or herb.

I'm a newbie and would love to be adopted. Last year I started growing a Ghost pepper mid-summer so unfortunately it didn't produce anything. I am overwintering it though! In November I tried germinating Redwood seeds to create a bonsai but unfortunately I had finals so I was not putting as much effort as they needed in. I really would also enjoy dwarf fruits that you can grow inside too! As you can see I really love interesting plants. I do not care really about the beauty of the flower but that it is productive or that it is unique in some way. I prefer perennials so I don't have to overwinter things, but unfortunately it seems anything I'm after won't survive the zone 5 in the suburbs of Chicago. If anyone would like to help me start my endeavors or have any ideas for things that I would be interested that would be wonderful! Oh and I also have a piranha tank that I'm looking to put live plants in and I have no experience whatsoever with aquatic plants so that would also be a plus.
Thanks again,
TJ

Asking to be adopted is a bit difficult for me. I'm a middle-aged nurse who is much more comfortable giving than receiving any aid but I do love the notion of connecting with a veteran who could help get me started in the right direction. I am Zone 7 in Arkansas and interested in heirloom/open-pollinated veggies, fruits, and herbs. Don't have much time for ornamentals in my life right now but would love to start gardening again now that I'm an empty nester. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

hi falldaisies =)
i am guessing this is directed at me, and you want me to change the blurb beside your name?

its hard to fit too much info in there, if you would summarize some general wants ...or what you want you want the blurb to say- i can edit it. it is best if its short and sweet, just a general idea of what you want.

right now yours says - falldaisies zone 6 (flowering bulbs, artichokes & blueberries dwarf fruit trees indoors/citrus)
if theres something else you want me to write there, let me know, but lets keep it short.

then have you figured out how to edit your "seeds wanted" list? thats the place for all the specifics. just list everything that you want there, then when someone goes to your page they can read all that. its good to have a nice long want list, so dont be shy about listing everything, often times people will look over it and might even surprise you with extras from your want list.

GW is not very intuitive with its layout, but at the bottom of every page theres a large grey area with many links. click on "member pages" and then edit your exchange list...from that page you can edit all your info and fill out your have and want lists.

youre welcome.
yeah it took me forever to figure out how to put up my want list and have list when i was a newbie...but every page on garden web has that grey area with the links on the very bottom.

you can also " edit your membership details" once you click on the "member pages" link...thats where you can add your growing zone, location and very importantly * click the checkbox where it says "allow other members to contact you via email" or something like that. that is important so that the emails people send will get to you...

ok since we have reached the maximum amount of posts on this thread, i have started a new thread with the OP.

i am not trying to take over as host of this thread, maybe you can think of me as a temporary babysitter =) if there is someone who wants to take over, you should! since i am guessing the OP had to take a break after doing this for a long time.

for now i have a lot of free time, but once it warms up i will not be online much. i will check in every now and again and try to post the updated list every so often.

anywho to keep following this thread click on this link:
