Feast - of some kind

HerbJuly 12, 2005

At first I thought that the black spots on these Poppy Seedheads were some sort of sap (Opium?) oozing out - but when I took this close-up picture I see they're tiny beetle-like insects. I guess they must be feeding on something?

Eeeeww...they look like black Aphids! You must have a great camera!

Aphids, eh - so that's what they are?

The camera's a Canon S1IS plus an old binocular lens. I fitted it in a tube that slips over the Canon lens barrel. I can get much bigger close-ups than this but then I have to set the camera on a tripod...

I may try this to see if I can get a picture of one of the Aphids.

I think those are going to be stoned aphids. Not that much alkaloids in the raw seedhead sap, but I think it would get to you if you lived off it!
