Rosemarie you might be right. i might need some help here. Is it Scottish thistle or Spear thistle? Impressive plant that we don't seem to have round here. Good enough to have in the garden.

That's a Spear Thistle (Cirsium vulgare). Scots Thistle (Onopordum acanthium) has silvery leaves and is much taller.
