Yikes! A cat found my veggie garden, help!

CathyEarpJuly 19, 2012

Over the winter I allowed a leaf lettuce to go to seed. Unfortunately a neighbors kitty also found my raised garden beds. I found some cat scat and cleared it out. The seeds of the lettuce plants came up in the same spot where the cat poop had laid since it was a low area in the garden... they settled there. My question is this, is it safe to eat leaf lettuce (or any vegetable for that manner) from my garden if a cat has used it as a cat box! I seem to have kept him out since that one time by using blended orange peels in water and spreading it around the garden along with some very spikey lemon branches. But I don't know if my soil is ruined. Thanks for your help.

No problem and quite common. Gardens are quite used to many different animal visitations and the area has more than weathered well.

Assuming you wash your produce well before eating there is no threat to you when eating the food.
