New member with a question

Sarah1502January 31, 2013

Hello! I have been reading this forum for a while now. I really appreciate all of the helpful information posted here. I have just gotten back into growing houseplants after many years. My daughter, who is 10, is enjoying this hobby with me. It has been a wonderful thing for us to do together.

I have a question about plants 'weeping'. My Chinese evergreen and my dieffenbachia sometimes have droplets of water on the leaf tips or along the leaf edge. I am pretty sure that I am not overwatering these plants. I have read enough information here to know to be careful about that. Am I doing something else wrong? I have not noticed this happening with my other plants. Any helpful advice would be much appreciated!

Thank You,
Sarah

Hi & welcome to Gardenweb! So cool to hear your daughter is becoming a plant-o-phile with you. Fun!

Your plants are perfectly normal. What they're doing is called guttation. There was a lively discussion about it recently. May be more than you want to read/know about it, but lots of info and theories there...

Thank You Purple! I am relieved. The plants look very healthy. I would be terribly upset if I were somehow killing them. Once you name a plant, it becomes personal. LOL

P.S. My mamma's family at one time lived in Opp. Small world. :)

Hey, that's cool that you have that Opp connection. Tell your family it probably looks about the same as it did then.

Those are pretty tough plants. Feel free to show some pics of them if you feel like it (GW allows one pic per post.) Never enough plant porn here!

My DH says all potted plants are named Steve. He's kind of silly, always making me laugh...

Oh dear. I don't have a "Steve" or a "Bruce". I shall have to remedy that asap. :)

Hey, Rick. It's called guttation when the leaves cry or leak. Perfectly normal in many plants. Nice looking Dief!
