perping garlic bed

cjtabares(MA Zone 6)August 9, 2012

I will be planting garlic in Mid-October where I just planted peas about 2 weeks ago. I was going to clear the area at the end of September to get ready to plant the garlic. If I didn't get peas I was not going to be worried, but thought it might be good to get a crop in the spot. I am getting a lot of weeds in that area now and am just wondering if I could do something to prevent the weeds being in the bed when the garlic is in that spot?

You could put down cardboard except where the peas are, and weed by hand in between the peas. In my experience, I never had good garlic under beans for some reason. Except for this, you can plant the garlic in the bed even as the peas are maturing, and even replace the cardboard once the garlic is planted, for another 3 weeks or so.

If you are no-till, a cover crop might hold down weeds.
I going to till under the crops & compost, & mulch with wheat straw.
