My mother obtained this small shrub thing about 10yrs ago in a basket arrangement while she was very sick. It hasn't grown much at all in that time. I have searched high and low at sites and in books trying to find what it is. The leaves are shiny evergreen and has red berries on stems.

It grows a tuft of new leaves on top every 2 years or so over the old and kinda fills in the area every other year. It has never been trimmed or anything and keeps itself pretty compact.

Any help much appreciated.

That's Ardesia crenata. There are several common names for it, but I only know it as Ardesia.

Thanks Rhizo. That is what is appears to be. You have delighted my mother since she has nagged me for years to find out what it is.

Thanks Emerald. I think it is nifty looking too and might get one myself now that I know what to look for. I'll probably grow some annuals under it though.
