Amaryllis seed pod

elsier(z6 KY)May 4, 2011

Hi,

My Amaryllis started to bloomed a few weeks ago. The stem was so large that it snapped off before the flowers opened. So I put it in water where the 5 flowers opened up.

Of the 5 flowers, 2 were pollinated & have developed seed pods. One of them is about the size of a kumquat, nice and firm, a bright green color. The other seems very slow developing and may not make it.

How can I tell when the seed pod is ripe? Has anyone out there grown amaryllis from seed? any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Elsie

Hi Elsie,
It will start to change color and eventually turn tan/brown and burst open.

I haven't had a chance to grow from seed yet.

There is a forum for Amaryllis. There's lots of great people and information for them there.

Good luck with them,
JoJo

I have abouut 10 plants of the species. I have failed to germinate any seeds yet. I need a lesson on this, I know the seeds must be black before they are ripe, and fully developed. That all that I know.

I am growing Amaryllis (Hippeastrum correctly) from seeds and they are very easy to germinate and grow. They just require warmer temperature to sprout.

Here is a pic of my 4 month old seedlings ready to put in individual pots:
