To keep the weeds from coming up? This is the first year for my plants.
Thanks for your suggestions!
wood chips. rip out the weeds, apply 8 inches. There is nothing better. Leaves will mat and stop shoots next year, and will also last a short time. Cardboard does the same.
Sorry glib but wood chips is the last thing I would use. Very pest attractive and nitrogen binding.
All our asparagus beds are heavily mulched with a think layer of old hay and lots of shredded leaves and have been for several years. Never had any problems with it blocking the shoots.
I use some wood chips but not a high percentage. I like to use a variety in my mulches. Straw, leaves, wood chips, compost, grass clippings, certain pulled weeds, coffee grounds, banana peels, brewery waste etc.
shredded leaves last a very short time, plus you have to have a shredder. In my experience, voles or other rodents are equally attracted to leaves and chips. They are also attracted to hoop houses. And no, surface wood chips do not bind nitrogen, they have to be tilled in to do that. Every other perennial is mulched with chips, and I have yet to see one with nitrogen deficiency.
