thinking about next year

sweetwilliam89(5b)August 22, 2012

After a few years of establishing a square foot garden my wife and I are interested in adding a traditionally laid out garden as we're running out of room with all the ornamentals. Perhaps I can't get square foot layouts out of my mind, but I was wondering if the spacing requirements between rows normally includes walking room or not. The space listed between rows is nearly always more than the space within rows. It seems like that would created a rectangular shape:

But most vegetables (save for vining ones) are more round shaped.

And is it ok to plant smaller vegetables back to back

Or should there always be a path between plants?

You can use the software at GrowVeg.com free for a month -- long enough to know if it answers your questions. You actually lay out your beds, then fill with veggies and herbs and other plants that have spacing data already coded in. They have a square foot version but I've never used it.

If you try the GrowVeg planner, make the initial size of the garden as large as your maximum space, locate your permanent beds, and fill in veggies from there. It's fun to see what you can do.
