Precautionary systemic usage?

amccourMay 15, 2011

I've had some mealy issues. Primarily limited to certain cacti, all of which have been isolated or treated or dealt with in some other way (also area near them being wiped down with bleach wipes, etc), but I'm somewhat concerned about the presence of mealies on/around plants that I've yet to notice.

Right now I'm considering just doing some applications of imidacloprid granules preemptively to, hopefully, stop flareups before they start. Would there be any danger in doing this? I've heard that misapplication of pesticides can lead to resistant pest populations forming, and apparently imidacloprid can mess up organic nutrient uptake in plants by binding to organic nutrients in the soil.

I wouldn't for the reasons you mentioned and also some spider mite outbreaks have been known to follow imidacloprid usage.
