pole beans dying, little white bugs at roots

karen_pghAugust 21, 2012

My pole beans died this year, barely producing a handful of beans. When we pulled them out there were tiny white round bugs on the roots. Not maggots. Looked like sesame seeds. Any ideas what these are, if they were the cause of the plants dying and what to do now?

It could be nematodes. The white bumps are not the actual nematodes, which are too small to see, but the damage they inflict on the roots.

Here is a link that might be useful: nematode pest notes

Perhaps nodules of nitrogen-fixing bacteria? If so,normal.

Root aphids? Is a picture possible, because as Jean said, could just be the normal root nodules?

I think maybe root aphids. They are definatly moving bugs but so small, it's hard to see details. Googling root aphids it appears to be a common problem with marijuana growers! But the photos appear to be very similar. Now to figure out how to control and prevent.

Root aphids would be *extremely* unusual on beans. Seriously doubt yours have them.

I get root aphids on every plant type in my garden, primarily thanks to cornfield ants. They don't discriminate, they also bring root mealy bugs. If there are ants farming them, you will have to also deal with the ants. I sprayedneem down into the ant tunnels at the base of the plants, which seemed to help with the aphids, had to get bait stations going to really control the ants. Actually, I was just doing a minor search to see if other ideas popped up, and I found at least one garden guide thats says root aphids a a common problem for beans. Perhaps it is rgional.
