house plant id with pictures

hackgardenerJune 15, 2012

I found these two plants by the dumpster, and I would like to get them back to health. Can anyone give me IDs and advice for their care? I already cut off some old withered branches and leaves. Now I need to know what they are and what conditions they'll like. Thanks!

Dieffenbachia with a sunburned leaf. These plants likes as much light as they can get without actually having the sun shine directly on it, except maybe very early AM or late PM. It's going to take a long time to dry out in that pot, which could give it root rot. Do you have a smaller pot? If that's the pot you found it in, that may be why it (they) wasn't doing well and discarded. It also looks like the 2nd one may have lost its' variegation, therefore its' attractiveness in the eye of the previous beholder.

Or it could be one of the many aglaonema varieties. The knobbly stems look like my old one. Have a look on google images.

Looks like Diffenbachia picta.

I agree, the leaves are faded from harsh sun.

A bright location will do. No direct spring/summer sun.

One thing Diffs do not like is wet feet, so make sure soil drys between waterings.
Moreso in winter.
