Some kind of Cordyline? Can it be a house plant?

Moosetrackz(9)June 15, 2011

I think I have some kind of Cordyline. Id love if things were better labeled at my Home Depot lol. I just need to know if I can keep this plant inside or if it would do better as an outside plant. I dont really know a lot about palm type plants but this one caught my eye and I want to learn to take care of it the best I can.

Cordyline and Dracaenas are closely related.
I'm not sure if your plant is Dracaena 'marginata' variegata or Variegated Cordyline.

Ironically, I always buy a Spike/Cordyline for an outdoor container. While at Home Depot the other day, all they had were green Cordylines. I asked a garden dept clerk where the variegated or purple Cordylines were. She told me this year, the only variegated Spikes were D. marginatas.

No matter, both D. marginata and Cordyline can be used as a house plant. You'll know more when it matures. They're identical when young, but change with age.

Moose, neither are palms..Toni

I'm w/ Toni on this, I think what you've got is Dracena marginata. I believe the leaves are not the right style or shape for Cordyline.

As to growing needs, sorry I don't know, but it's fine as an indoor plant. My sister had one for many years until one day the cats got to it ... pulled it down from on high, not a pretty picture.

Im glad I can keep it as a houseplant, I have too many outside as it is and needed a few inside plants. :)
