Best (small) watermelons?

bart1(6/7 Northern VA)September 11, 2012

I had a pretty bad watermelon season this year. We had a lot of rain and humidity which brought mildews and I didn't harvest a lot of melons when I should have. So naturally I'm looking forward to next year.

What are your favorite watermelons for taste?

I prefer the small icebox types because they are easier to handle and don't take forever to eat, but I'm open to all options. I grew Sugarbaby, Blacktail Mountain, New Queen, Yellow doll and Cream of Sask. Unfortunately because of my poor season I have no real idea about which of those were the best, worst or other.

Depends on what you like. Red flesh or yellow flesh. You have a good assortment, the only ones I would add to your list are Mickylee and Wilson Sweet. Of course if you like seedless melons, there is a long list.

For small melons I vote for Yellow Doll. Then there is the larger but not huge seedless like Cooperstown red which did well for me. On larger melons I recommend Sangria, Raspa, and Gold Strike.

I into growing large family water melons.
But I grew sugar babies for my mother & they were good.
