Ivy that smells

coldlime(5)July 26, 2014

We have a Ivy plant in our kitchen window that is about 8 years old. It would produce nodes that would turn into flowers that would look like parachutes and then each petal would look again like smaller parachutes. when it had flowers (pinkish white ) they would stink up the whole kitchen. My wife cut the flowers each time. Now its been at least two years since any flowers.
Any help with a plant ID so I might seek another. I really liked how cool the flowers looked, and thought the smell was unique.
Thanks for your time reading

Clearly not an Ivy but a vine of some kind. And flowers that "would stink up the whole place ", but you liked it and want more?

How about taking a good picture of your plant so that we might have a shot at identifying it?

I'll go out on a limb and guess that you have a Hoya of some kind. Look it up to compare, but a picture will get you an ID pretty fast.

Thanks. That's it a Hoya. I'd have never known...
About the smell, once you know that its not the garbage can or something in it that stinks, its ok. I guess I respect the smell/plant.
Thanks again

I once had an enormous Hoya that bloomed most of the year filling the whole downstairs with the aroma of rancid chocolate. I couldn't wait to get rid of it, but it was so big it intimidated people! And there was that smell.....

Finally, the right person heard about it and took it away with him for his conservatory. Made me take a bunch of money, too, though I was so glad to have it out of my home.
