Help me identify white clusters growing in planter box (pic)

uscjustoSeptember 2, 2012

I have these clumps/clusters of white balls growing on the top of the soil in my planter box around my plants (tomatoes, squash, and green onions).

Recently, the individual white balls have opened up/burst. Is it some kind of fungus releasing spores or something?

I can't figure it out? I pulled some out and they have their own root structure on the top layer of the soil.

What is the cause? Are they dangerous to my plants?

Yes, it's fungus. Little, biddy puff balls. Much like the ones that might grow in one's lawn, but smaller.

Bird's Nest Fungus. Common on decaying wood, not harmful to your garden.
