Just saved a couple of plants from ikea

tamela_star(Zone 7)August 2, 2013

I bought a pink arrowhead plant and a Boston fern for 1.25 today from a ikea store that neglects their plants. I just wish I had more money so I could've gotten more at such a discounted price. The fern looked and still looks really bad off. The arrowhead looks better now that I watered it and took off all the dead leaves. Here is a before photo I took right after I got them.

Here they are an hour later. After a good watering and grooming. Any tips on bringing back a Boston fern would be appreciated.

The fern - morning light, very well-drained, porous soil, don't let it get too dry.

Syngonium is the other one, same thing but might lose its' color with significant direct light, so less light.

Both are great subjects for hanging baskets, if you're into that kind of thing.

Great job cleaning them up!

Ferns need high humidity in wintertime, to avoid browning and drying of the leaves. One reason I never tried them.

My fern lives in the bathroom (lots of humidity), next to a window, but with no direct sunlight. It seems to be happy there.

No brown tips, except for a couple that it had when I got it.

Thanks! Luckily for the fern, I mist my houseplants in the mornings for humidity.

Thank you! The pink arrowhead plant will be added to my daughter's container garden of pink plants. I hate it when places sell plants and don't hire people to care for them while they're healthy.

The result of that would be that the plants cost more, and rarely if ever placed on clearance like these.

"Foliar Diseases
Diseases of the leaves of houseplants are rarer than
root rots. However, if the foliage of an indoor plant is
subjected to high humidity or frequent misting, disease
problems on the foliage can occur. Symptoms of
common foliar diseases can include leaf spots, lesions,
blights or dieback, with or without water-soaking,
yellowing, browning or defoliation of leaves. If detected
early and diagnosed correctly, cultural practices of
removing and destroying infected material often can
lead to satisfactory management of the disease.
Fungicides are available for some foliar diseases.
Leaf spots and lesions on indoor plants more often are
caused by environmental factors, insect or arthropod
injury, phytotoxic aerosols or other factors. They rarely
are caused by pathogens in the indoor home
environment. Table 2 summarizes a few foliar
diseases that may be encountered in
houseplants, along with their causes,
symptoms, plants affected and corresponding management strategies."
