plants to keep bugs away

dowlinggramOctober 18, 2012

I was just reading my new old farmers almanac and came adross this article. They certain plants and herbs keep away certain bugs so I'm passing it along. I edited out plants that I would never have in my garden because they are either too invasive and could become pests. So here's the list

basil------flies, hornworms

borage-----tomato hornworms

catnip-----aphids, flea beetles

flax-------potato bugs

garlic-----japanese beetles

leek-------carrot flies

marigold---mexican bean beetle,nematoids

nasturtium-squash bugs, striped pumpkin beetles

rosemary---cabbage moths, carrot flies, mexican bean beetles

sage-------cabbage moth, carrot flies

tansy------ants, japanese beetles, stripped cucumber beetles

thyme------cabbage worms

I don't know how effective these are but it would be worth a try.

The one plant that I would definitely add to this list is nicotiana affinis, otherwise called night-scented tobacco. It's fragrance is absolutely delicious in the evenings and it traps aphids in its sticky hairy leaves and stem. Read more about it (with photos) at: http://alan-chadwick.org/html%20pages/techniques/garden_plants/veg_photos.html . But beware, only get the white flowered one, as the colored ones are much less effective or fragrant.

Catnip is a form of mint, will any mint work?

I have one mint growing here that probably came from house plants thrown out.
I also planted genuine Catnip this summer.

They do not smell the same but my cat much prefers the volunteer one to Catnip.
