Palm fronds coming up brown

bgiffordSeptember 15, 2010

I recently purchased a young Areca Palm from the nursery. I re-potted it in a large 12" pot for room to grow, and am using a well-draining soil. I've been giving it a light misting daily, and initial watering about three times/week. The tips of the leaves have been slowly browning, and now I notice that the new fronds are coming up brown. Is this a possible root-rot? I am new to these plants but I've read that it's very easy to over or under-water; but how can I be sure? What are these symptoms most likely conducive to?

Thanks in advance!

What jumps out at me is, 3 waterings a week sounds like much too much water for a plant that was so recently potted up .... and the misting isn't likely offering any benefit.

A chopstick or sharpened dowel stuck deep into the soil should come out clean & dry before you water.

Only water when the soil feels dry. Stick you finger down into the soil to tell. Do not water again until it is dry.

Most importantly, what sort of light are you giving the plant?
Poor light and over-watering can cause serious problems.
