New tips on vines

Tiffany, purpleinopp GardenWeb, Z8b Opp, ALSeptember 16, 2013

If left to their own devices, most vines will continue as a single stem indefinitely. But if one snips the tip, it has no choice but to make a new one. Usually (if it has some age and vigor, acceptable conditions,) there will be more than one.

Here's an example with heart-leaf Philodendron. A couple weeks ago, I cut this vine to share and at the node closest to the cut, a new tip started to emerge right away, new leaf almost ready to uncurl to the right. Yesterday I noticed another one on the next node (which would be down and to the left, in the corner in this pic.) Can you see them?

Let's see your new tips!

Sweet potato vine has similar plans for itself, with at least 2, possibly 3 new tips.

Creeping Callisia went from a single stem to this in about 3 weeks. New tip at the cut end, to the right, and a new tip at almost every node.
