When to bring spiderplant inside?

pagirlmint(6a)September 4, 2011

I have 3 spider plants in a coco/wire basket hanging between two maple trees & they love it out there. But the weather is getting colder now & I wonder if it's getting time to bring them in?

They aren't big plants, I snipped them off the mom in (I think) early/mid June. So they are small but already starting to produce babies! I've never watered them or protected them from the sun & they love it out there. So I feel kind of bad bringing them in but they are silk green ones & I had a heck of a time finding them, I don't want to kill them. :\

The weather is dipping into the 50's at night & is usually around the mid 40's by mid-Sept, is that too cold? Should I just suck it up & bring them in the house?

Chlorophytum species are among the most cold hardy of our favorite tropicals. I've seen it used as a landscape addition in Hilton Head where it may have been killed to the ground in heavy frosts, but always came back from the roots.

I'd not worry about your plant until it's beginning to hit the low 40s.

Agreed. They are perennials here, fine in shade but grow better with lots of sun. Anything warmer than frost (which wouldn't hurt but might make it want to go dormant) is fine. I sometimes bring in ones in hanging baskets anyway, just to have more plants in the house.
