Hanging an old window on the house

marymb(Oregon zone 8)May 20, 2011

I have a couple of beautiful old windows with diamond shaped panes that I would like to hang on the house, with a hayrack below. We don't know how to go about hanging the window though. Do we screw it directly into the siding, use hooks, or what? My main concern is the wind could bang it against the side of the house and break the glass. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mary, I have three old windows hanging on the side of our garage. What we did was use kitchen cabinet hinges. We put two on each window and then secured (screwed) the hinges to the garage wall. We get a lot of wind storms and the windows never budge.

You don't specify what type of siding, but generally it's not a good idea to make holes in the side of your house and in this case you would have to make a lot of big holes. They do make brackets for attaching window boxes, but you want them to be sturdy enough to hold a lot of weight.

Without knowing a lot more information it's hard to recommend a specific solution. I would make a frame that holds the window and hayrack and secure it from the ground up and use pvc pipe pieces to buffer it against the house. It would look sort of like a door with a window when finished. Then if you need to attach to the house at the top there would be fewer holes or you could use cables from the eaves.

Since we cross posted, I would add that using the garage side of the house to attach things is definitely better than the occupied side.
