Anyone had a Gynura?

I had one of these years ago when living at mom's. I was attracted by the luscious velvety leaves. Then it flowered and it stank to high heaven then went leggy. I guess one should pinch the flowers off before they open, but I found out it was a member of the daisy family so I had to satisfy my curiosity!

Yes, I agree that those flowers stink like crazy. We only need to experience it once to learn that lesson, right?

Larry, I adore Gynura/Purple Passion, with their fuzzy, deep purple foliage.

The last time I bought Gynura, '10-yrs or so,' variegated to boot, as soon as I got home from Home Depot, where it was purchased, I did an inspection.
Sure enough, Mealybugs were hidden under leaves. It was inexpensive, about 3.00, so I didn't bother bringing it back..Gas would have been more expensive than the plant. lol.
Instead, it went in the trash, and I washed my hands a zillion times, not wanting to infest other plants.

A couple years later, HD had more, non-variegated..This time I checked at the store, and sure enough, Mealybugs.

As much as I adore Gynuras, mealy feel the same.

GlassHouseWorks have some unusual varieties. Don't know if they ship overseas, but it's worth a look-see. And I'm sure GHW's plants are not from the same nursery as HD's, so most likely, no mealy. Toni

"Anyone had a Gynura?" Had, sure. Have had several die and think it was from mealies, like Toni said.

See them often at WM and they usually have some kind of bugs but the one I bought recently doesn't seem to have anything on it, been here a couple months. Likes a LOT of sun, who knows what will happen inside later. Hoping it won't get critters if it gets enough sun. I'm thinking S-facing windowsill.

I had one for years, but each winter it suffered and finally died. Never had a problem with mealybugs.
