Just seeded - how long until mowing?

mikec82March 15, 2012

I just re-seeded/fertilized portions of my lawn where grass already existed, but was sparse. Do I need to wait a certain amount of time before running a mower over these portions? I've watered a couple of times, but I just seeded yesterday morning.

Wait until the grass is tall enough to mow, then mow. Seriously. That would be 5 inches high for fescue (mow back to 4 inches or the highest setting on your mower) and 4 inches high for Kentucky bluegrass (mow back to 3.5 inches). If you seeded bermuda, that seed won't germinate until June anyway so you have time to wait. Mow bermuda at your mower's lowest setting.

Just so's you know, spring is not a great time to seed. The new grass will not have a hardy root system to withstand the summer heat. Also the crabgrass seed is waiting for some water. It is very likely you will have a full patch of crabgrass in your thin areas. But don't worry about it. Just live with it until fall. The crabgrass will die anyway in the fall and you can seed your grass then.

Sorry Dchall, this is just misinformation. Newly seeded TTTF should be cut when it's 3 inches, down to 2. KBG is the same although you can cut it a bit shorter 2.5 down to 1.75 or so. Even if it was mature TTTF, 5 inches is too long, especially in TN.
