Application of Weed and Feed

walt1(7 a)March 17, 2014

Hello, Folks

Which month in zone 7 should weed and feed be applied to tall fescue grass?

I haven't used weed and feed in the past, I would hand spray individual weeds.
I'm getting older now and thought using W&F might save some work and time!

Any input will help
Thanks

I've used Weed & Feed in the past but have found there are much better alternatives. Typically fescue doesn't need fertilzer this time of year. An application of fertilizer is better in early May when the grass has nearly depleted it's supply of nutrients that were stored up over the winter.

For the herbicide part of Weed & Feed the weeds need to be wet so the granules will stick to them. Spray herbicides that target the particular weeds you are trying to control typcally work much better and are much more cost effective. Right now stuff like chickweed is actively growing but weeds like dandelions are still lying dormant or haven't even come up yet. If it were me I would spot spray the stuf you already have growing and then later in the season you can spot spray the other stuff that comes up.

That being said, if you still want to use a Weed & Feed product I would wait until late April to apply it.

Thanks ForsheeMS,

Will probably continue with selective applications of different weeds.

Thanks Again!

Most people have bad luck with weed and feed because the instructions are counter-intuitive. Fertilizer is never applied to wet grass, so using wnf on wet grass seems sacrilegious. But most people have better luck fertilizing first (in April as was mentioned) and following up 2 weeks later with spot spray.

How often do you water and for how long?
How high/low do you mow?

These cultural practices will do more to encourage or discourage weeds than anything else.
