Manual Sod Cutting?

absoluteblockApril 12, 2012

Has anyone improvised a method to manually cut sod?

I have some spots in the yard where a sod cutter won't work because of the steep hill and clearance problems with the cutter. Not big areas, each is 10 feet long at most by 1-2 feet wide. Yes, I can always use a shovel, but it's a struggle to maintain consistent depth.

Ideas?

A sod lifter is sold at all the home stores. See link below for what it looks like.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sod Lifter

Any manual tool will be a struggle to maintain consistent depth. Just the nature of the beast(us).

Nope. Disagree when using a sod lifter.

Could you explain how the Sod Lifter is different from a shovel? I see that the handle is angled better, but how do you maintain consistent depth?
