dealing with rye grass! help

newbie21April 28, 2014

We finished our build last summer. Not the time to sew fescue. So i put out some rye grass to keep the yard from washing away. I thought it was annual. It came up great, we had a tremendous amount of rain and it died. I then covered the yard with hay (not straw) to prevent erosion. Near the the end of September, the yard was prepped and hyrdoseeded with a fescue blend. We had some rye come up but I didn't think it was any big deal. However, this spring I have TONS of rye grass in what would be an otherwise beautiful yard.It is growing 2 feet a day. I'm not sure where it came from....Is there anything I can do??

I'm in the same boat as you. I planted rye in September. It came up and did its job through the winter. Now I'm trying to get a real yard established and the rye is growing like crazy still. It is loving the fertilizer I put down for the seeds and all of this rain. I can't get anything to germinate with it. I've had fescue seeded for two weeks with no germination. I'm not real sure what to do now. Maybe someone can help us.

I'm no expert but could it be seeds from the hay you laid down and not rye? I put straw in my garden for mulch one year and had a mess after it grew from seed and went crazy. If it is rye, it should die off when the weather gets hot.
