Dead grass spots from 2,4-D - what to do?

Hound_Dog_CharleyMay 1, 2014

I got a little overzealous in my attempt to rid my yard of dandelions and mixed too high of a 2,4-D concentrate and probably sprayed too much at the dandelions leaving me with some dead grass spots as seen in the pics below.

My question... how should I proceed? Should I just rip out the unsightly dead grass and wait for the surrounding grass to take over? Are the spots small enough for this to happen? The lawn is fairly thick and lush in this area. Should I just leave it and deal with the ugly yellow spots until the grass takes over?

Or should I buy a little sod and patch up the spots with the sod?

The last option will obviously result in the best looking lawn in the short term, but also won't it somewhat prevent the exisitng grass from blending in and leave me with a patchy looking lawn? Especially if some of the pieces of sod don't take. It also requires the most work. ;)

Thanks for the help.

I'd give it another week if it doesn't start to green up by then buy a roll of sod and patch the spots.

If it is Kentucky bluegrass it will fill in. If it is fescue you need to fix it manually somehow.

How often do you water and for how long?

How high do you mow?
